Chapter 1: Why Import Clothing from China?
I think the reasons for importing clothing from China are pretty obvious.
But before we go into the why, here is something you should know:
A few decades ago, China was popularly known for its monarchies and prehistoric civilization.
But today the country has changed.
It continues to become a ginormous economy, overpowering Japan and positioning next to the US.
In the textile and apparel industry, China has the world’s largest market share.
Billions of clothing products leave China every year as exports to Africa, Europe, America, Australia, and Asia.
Even some of the world’s well-known clothing brands outsource their designs to Chinese manufacturers.
Exporters of textile
This is because one, Chinese labor is very cheap.
Two, raw materials in China are readily available and are affordable too.
And last but not least, Chinese laws on exportation are not as strict as that of many other countries.
So generally, clothing from China is cheap, not by quality but by price.
Therefore, those of you who are looking to share a slice in the pie by importing clothing, the Chinese clothing market is one that you shouldn’t miss.
In China, you will find a variety of clothing items at insanely low prices.
Here, you can find clothing of any budget range.
The only variable element is the quality of the clothing.
Clothing quality in China ranges from original designer clothing, fake designer clothing, to unbranded but unique clothing.
Traditional Chinese clothing – Source: China Daily
There is something for everyone if it’s right to say that.
The best part?
It is no hassle finding a clothing manufacturer or supplier in China as there are so many of them.
You can locate Chinese clothing manufacturers and suppliers online via Alibaba, global sources, etc.
Or, you can simplyvisitChinayourself or even use a sourcing agent to find reliable suppliers for you.
Chapter 2: What to Look for When Importing Clothes from China
There are three critical things to finding the right clothes and clothing supplier in China.
These are supplier capability, quality compliance (and social compliance), tech pack and MOQ requirements.
In this chapter, I will break down the importance of these four components to allow you to make the right decisions when importing clothes from China.
a) Clothes Manufacturing Capability
Considering manufacturing capability is key to finding the right clothing manufacturer in China.
Luckily with Chinese manufacturers, most of them are time tested.
Their manufacturing capabilities are just out of this world.
But just to be sure, you have to do due diligence to ensure that you’re getting the right supplier for your needs.
Clothes manufacturing factory in China
In this case, you need to ask questions like:
- What type of manufacturer are they? There are full pack manufacturers who do everything including sourcing for materials and sewing.
Then there are CMT manufacturers whose only role is to sew the fabric that you provide.
It’s up to you to decide what kind of manufacturer you want to work with based on your clothing requirements.
- Another question to ask is the brands that the manufacturer has worked with before? This will help give you a clear picture of the manufacturer’s capabilities and the quality of their work.
- You also have to ask for certifications and licensing to prove the supplier’s compliance with industry standards.
- Timeline of delivery is also an important question to ask. Unexpected delays happen and trust that you don’t want your order to be caught up in any delays.
The best way to avoid this is to establish a communication ground.
Know how often and by what means you will be communicating the progress of production.
I believe the answers you get to these questions are enough to help you rate a clothing manufacturer’s capability.
b) Quality Compliance
When assessing your supplier capability, you also need to evaluate their ability to produce compliant goods.
Yes, you don’t want to work with a supplier whose products do not comfort to industry rules and regulations.
Quality compliance
Therefore, to know if a supplier adheres to product quality compliance, you should check if they offer any;
- Physical tests – for checking dimension of fabric, quality of zipper, buttons, etc.
- Chemical tests – for checking color fastness to washing, heat, etc.
Also, you want to be sure that the supplier complies with restrictions on hazardous materials.
AZO dyes and formaldehyde are some of the materials that are restricted for use in clothing production.
For those of you importing to the US, EU or Australia, this is something that you have to take into serious consideration.
Clothes that use the above substances are not allowed for importation into the said regions.
Apart from these, you also want to ascertain that the supplier can also conform to your quality standards.
Dyed clothes
An ISO certification is an indication that the supplier is capable of monitoring quality at each stage of the production process.
So look out for suppliers with either ISO 9001 or ISO 14001.
You can learn more about quality compliance here:
- An overview of quality and quality control
- Textiles, Clothing and Fashion: Find Standards for Fashion and Textiles
To be entirely sure that the supplier you’re working with has covered all their bases, ensure that they comply with all the industry regulations.
In this case, you should opt to work with a supplier that meets the standards of social compliance.
For this, you will need to look for suppliers with either BSCI or Sedex certification.
c) Review Tech Pack before Importing Clothes from China
As you know, the clothing industry is very competitive.
To succeed in it, you need to do your homework and do it very well.
In light of this, the tech pack in clothing manufacturing is a crucial aspect.
It is how you tell your manufacturer what you want and how you want it.
It generally allows you to define the quality of the product you get.
So what does a Tech pack include?
It includes Fabric specifications,i.e. yarn count and type, fiber type and composition, colors, treatment and weight.
It also includes the clothing components,i.e. zippers, buttons, Velcro, etc.
Clothe design, size and logo placement are also among the things that you must specify in a Tech pack.
Generally, the details of your tech pack are what will birth your design into a finished product. So don’t gamble with it.
Make sure that every specification is fully thought out and listed.
This way, you can rest easy knowing that you will get the product that’s just right for your customers.
For more information on tech pack and how to create one, read this article: what is a tech pack
d) MOQ when Importing Clothes from China
Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is a critical manufacturing element for Chinese suppliers.
But then before we go deeper into this, allow me to tell you why manufacturers in China have MOQs.
MOQ
Chinese manufacturers argue that the steps are taken to complete a single order often takes the same amount of time and cost, no matter the volume.
So whether they’re producing 500 units or 100 units, the production process remains the same.
As such, absorbing these costs, especially those of non-value added activities is easier when spread across a large number of units.
Now,
Clothing manufacturers in China don’t only set MOQs per piece of clothing, but also on the fabric, size, color, and SKU.
For this reason, it is important that when importing from China, you ask for all the above MOQs.
And note that the MOQrequirements for Chinese clothing manufacturers often ranges from 500 to 1000 pieces.
Luckily, you can negotiate your way to a lower MOQ.
The only problem is that it is not the supplier that determines the total MOQ requirement.
How do I mean?
As I’d said, MOQ is not just set on the product alone, but also on the fabric, size, color, and SKU.
And usually, the SKU, color and fabric MOQs are often defined by the subcontractors, either wholly or partially.
The only place where the supplier often has full control is the MOQ per size.
In other words, it is easier to get a lesser MOQ per size than it is to get per SKU, color or even fabric.
My advice:
I understand that for a small business, having to order 500 units or above can be a tall order.
However, here is something you should know; most suppliers in China set their MOQs per product basis.
This means that they multiply the total MOQ requirement on the number of different SKUs that you order.
So when your product assortments include some different SKUs, it quickly runs up the MOQ to thousands of units.
T-shirts for sale
Thus, it would be better to limit your product assortment to one or two SKUs if it works for your supply chain.
Otherwise, you’ll have to consider sourcing from suppliers that offer lower MOQ but a much higher price per product-like AliExpress suppliers.
What now?
Well, at this point, I can tell you with confidence that if you pay attention to the above elements when importing clothes from China, your business stands to gain monumentally.
As I keep saying, China is a goldmine for importers looking to stay competitive in an already competitive market.
And to do that, you need to give customers what they want; quality clothing at affordable prices.
Chapter 3: Importing Different Clothing from China
Like food and shelter, clothing is a basic need for every living person.
Men and women alike love shopping for clothes.
Those with children too also shop a lot of clothes.
Thus, the demand for clothes in the world market whether women, men’s or children is one that’s never-ending.
As a matter of fact, it keeps increasing day in day out.
So, if you’re a clothes seller, here are some of the clothing’s that you can import from China.
1. Import children’s clothes from China
Children’s clothing range from dresses, trousers, shorts, t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, socks, headscarf’s, to suits.
For children’s clothing, material and quality are critical as children’s skin is very sensitive.
Thus, as clothes are worn in contact with the skin, poor choice of quality and material can result in very severe consequences.
Children clothes
As an importer of children’s clothing, therefore, always pay more attention to the quality of the cloth.
And, also to quality compliance especially compliance with restricted and hazardous materials.
2. Import men’s clothes from China
Just because men don’t utter much about it doesn’t mean that they don’t shop clothes; they do, and a lot!
Luckily, the men’s clothing market has a lot to offer these days.
Men’s clothes
Even clothing manufacturers are fighting hard to provide the latest fashion clothes for men.
So if you’re importing men’s clothing, remember to be market specific and to target trends.
For example, youth and adults enjoy unique and stylish clothing being introduced these days.
Some of the trendy clothes are casual trousers with hip-hop looks, t-shirts with celebrity pictures printed on them, cargo pants, sweatpants and many more.
More mature men would go for a stylish suit or smart casual wear.
Another thing, while men too shop a lot of clothing, they don’t do it so often it.
This means that they need very quality stuff that will last them a while before they head out for shopping again.
In other words, quality is also vital when importing men’s clothing from China.
3. Import ladies clothes from China
Women generally love to dress up.
And, they’re impulse buyers.
This means that they’ll shop anything that is good quality, trendy and classy.
From party dresses, soft jeans, tops, official wear to jumpsuits.
As long as it appeals to the eye, you can trust a woman to spend every last cent of hers to add a new piece of clothing in their closet.
Ladies’ clothes from China
So the trick here is to import the latest trends of ladies clothing if you want to sell.
Remember also that ladies tend to be very particular with certain materials.
For tops, chiffon and silk materials tend to appeal more to this market.
Soft khaki and soft jeans are also a good choice for trouser materials for ladies.
4. Import shirts from China
T-shirts are also in high demand in the clothing industry.
This is because it caters to both sexes; men and women.
You can source on Alibaba or travel to China to import t-shirts personally based on the order volume.
Shirt for sale
However, note one thing:
With t-shirts, you need to be particular about the logos and printing on them.
Most customers tend to be keen on these two things besides color.
5. Import designer clothes from China
I’ll be honest with you on this;
Designer clothes can fetch you a good amount of profit, but only if you’re importing original designer clothes.
Designer clothes
If you don’t know how to identify real designer clothing, then you’re in for losses that you won’t be able to recover from.
My point?
If you’re importing designer clothing, make sure that you’re only importing original products.
Don’t go for fake brands and pass them off as original.
the This will hurt your brand name and lower your customer base.
Another thing, this type of clothes cost almost an arm and a leg.
As such, be sure that you have enough capital to cater for the cost of importing designer clothing from China.
Last but not least, have a target market.
Like I said, designer wear is quite pricey.
Not everyone can afford it.
So identify a market first before you start the process of importation.
This way, you minimize the risk of stuck inventory and possible losses.
6. Import baby clothes from China
Babies are like children and are even much more sensitive.
They need very soft and warm clothing that is super comfortable on their skin.
Because of this, importing baby clothes should be based on material quality and safety.
And, since babies grow too fast, you should also identify the fast-moving clothing sizes to sell.
Usually, sizes 3-6 mos. sell fast than sizes 1 mos. clothes.
Baby clothes
Another thing, whether you’re importing baby girl or baby boy clothes, color is very important.
We like to dress baby boys in blue clothing and girls in pink sometimes purple clothing.
It’s a thing!
So maybe you can consider this when selecting your stock or making an order for production.
7. Import maternity clothes from China
Nowadays, women don’t wear those bulky, boxy, and shapeless clothes in their pregnancy days.
These women dress up pretty well.
So if you’re catering to this market, you have to know this and execute it in your importation process.
Instead of the old fashioned pregnancy dresses, import stylish maternity clothes.
Import maternity trousers, chiffon blouses, trendy maternity t-shirts, maxi dresses, leggings, shirt dresses, etc.
Maternity clothes
These are the type of clothes that women wear when pregnant today.
Clothes that flatter their bump and make them feel beautiful.
8. Import sports clothing from China
I wouldn’t be wrong to say that sports clothing are in season and refuse to get out of season.
With so many people making health and fitness a lifestyle, the demand for sports clothing is only set to go higher.
Sports clothes from China
Also, young boys and men are into wearing sports t-shirts (jerseys) with their jeans and sneakers for a more “sportish” look.
Sports clothing is also just sports clothing if it makes any sense.
Athletes need these for their training and competitive games.
You might want to consider this thriving market when importing clothes from China.
9. Import wedding dresses from China
Oh! Who doesn’t love weddings?
Stocking up on wedding dresses can be a brilliant way to level your business.
Despite the misconception that most people have about the wedding industry, wedding dresses tend to fetch goods profits.
Wedding dress
It is true that some of you often worry about the number of sales you will make in the business.
But then, global trends have consistently shown that the wedding industry is one of the most booming in recent times.
Many people are getting married today and truly, for a wedding to happen a wedding dress is needed however simple.
The global acceptance of the wedding gown as the bridal wear only makes this business more lucrative.
Even statistics can prove this fact. In the US alone, the wedding industry as of 2013 was valued at USD 53 billion.
Can you imagine that?
It only means that the industry is a prime market to invest in especially if you partner with a reliable wedding dress manufacturer.
10. Importing GOTS Organic Cotton Textile from China
The rising popularity in environmentally friendly lifestyle has seen an increase in the use of organic clothing.
Manufacturers today are setting out to produce clothes made out of organically grown cotton, hemp, and wool.
GOTS
So if you can find a tangible market for these type of clothing, then please don’t hesitate to venture into it.
Not so many people sell organic clothing.
Therefore, you can trust that as long as you’re providing authentic organic wear, your business will do well.
Remember, that GOTS is the universally accepted standard for organic clothing.
Therefore, as you seek out a supplier for organic clothing, ensure that they use GOTS certified materials.
11. Importing Bamboo Textile from China
Apart from cotton, wool, and hemp, bamboo is also a material that has found great use in the organic clothing industry.
Clothes made of bamboo are also gaining worldwide popularity, mostly because of their antibacterial and insulating benefits.
Bamboo fabric
Good thing?
Some very many Chinese manufacturers specialize in the production of bamboo clothing.
You just need to identify one that can meet your supply requirements and work with them.
These are the different type of clothing that you can import from China.
As you can see, you only need to identify a product type that can work for your business.
Once you do that, you can then move on to focusing on the cost of importing it.
Let’s talk about the cost of our next chapter.
Chapter 4: Cost of Importing Clothes from China
If you’re importing clothes from China to resell in your country, the cost is something that you have to consider.
Unfortunately, many importers start this venture only minding the price of the products they’re importing.
They fail to recognize the fact that you’ll have to part with a certain amount of money at every stage of the importation process.
And, that it is these costs all summed up together that will help determine how much you eventually sell your product for.
So if you want to enjoy profitable import clothes from China business, you must pay attention to cost.
Cost of importation, in this case, can be broke down as follows;
Cost of Shipping Clothes from China
The cost of shipping, basically, is the cost of moving the clothes from the factory in China to your final destination.
COSCO
This includes cartage costs, freight costs as well as loading and offloading costs.
In a broader view, your cost of shipping clothes from China to destination will cover the following:
- The cost of transporting clothes from supplier’s factory door to loading port in China. Note that this is only if your incoterm demands that you cater for transportation from the supplier’s factory.
If it does, you will have to hire a trucking service to truck the goods to your chosen port of departure.
- There is also the origin handling cost that includes packaging, loading and offloading of goods in China.
- Another cost that makes up a larger percentage of the shipping cost is the freight cost.
It is the cost you pay to have your shipment transported from a port in China to your destination port.
And it varies depending on the means of transportation and mode of shipping used.
- Other than these two, you will also have to cater for shipment transportation costs from port destination to the final
Again, you’ll have to hire a trucking service for this.
- And lastly, there is the cost of handling goods at the destination When the shipment arrives at the destination, it will have to be offloaded from the shipping vessel.
If shipping an entire container, you’ll also need unloading services once the shipments get to the final destination.
So generally, these are the mains costs that make up the cost of shipping clothes from China.
As earlier mentioned, shipping costs vary greatly depending on several factors, mainly the means of transportation used, the mode of shipping,i.e. FCL or LCL and incoterm used.
Import Duties and Taxes on Clothes and Textile
Now, apart from paying for shipping when importing goods from China, you’ll need to also pay for import duties and taxes.
As a rule of thumb, imports into any country tend to attract certain levies.
And, while these levies vary from country to country, they are a mandatory requirement for admission of entry of goods.
So how do you know how much your clothes imports will attract in terms of duties and taxes?
Well, as I said, it depends on your country’s customs rules and regulations.
Usually, though, duties and taxes are often based on the category of goods as stipulated by their HS code.
Import duties
The harmonized system tariff code will show the acceptable duty rate for the product.
Customs will use this rate to calculate your payable duties against the customs declared value of your shipment.
The customs value is declared on your commercial invoice, and customs authorities verify that.
Most countries calculate duty payable based on the total value of imports as declared by customs.
For example;
You’re importing a shipment whose worth is USD 50,000, and the duty rate is 15%.
Customs will calculate your duty as 15% of the USD 50,000.
This means that you will pay USD 7500 in duty.
But this is not all; there are usually other taxes like VAT and excise duty that you may also have to pay before the admission of entry.
Please note:
Import duties and taxes are often paid for during the process of customs clearance and at the destination port.
This means that by the time you start this process, you must have all the required documentation in order.
And, the information in these documents has to be accurate and clear.
Especially, the value of goods as shown in your commercial invoice.
Customs use this value to determine the declared value of goods.
Another thing, the process of duty determination and calculation tends to be tedious.
And if you’re not careful, you may end up paying more than you should in terms of duties and taxes.
As such, I’d recommend that you hire a professional customs broker to help you through this process.
Unless of course if you’re confident of handling it on your own.
Cost of Producing Clothes in China
I think when we talk about the cost of producing clothes in China we narrow down to the question of “is it worth it?”
You see, clothing production is a very labor intensive industry.
And in China, the cost of labor is cheap, way too cheap if you’re to compare it with other regions like America and Europe.
In China, the monthly wage of a garment worker is approximately USD150.
Also, labor is readily available unlike in other countries where the availability of workers is a problem.
So China still is the country that’s attracting clothing companies in the world including those from America and Europe.
Sample cost of production – Source: Hype beast
So, now why is the cost of producing clothes in China cheap?
Well, for one the labor cost, though on the rise, is still very low.
This is because,inChina, rural-urban migration is growing at a rapid rate as people are flooding the cities looking for work.
You know very well, that with most things when there is a large supply of it, prices stay down. This is the case with Chinese labor.
Another reason for the cheap cost of production in China is the large scale production.
You see, importer A wants t-shirts, importer B wants t-shirts also, and importer C also wants t-shirts.
Clothes production factory in China
What happens?
When all three importer’s orders are put together, large scale production becomes not only possible but a no brainer.
There is so much market left for clothing commodities about there that Chinese manufacturers have no problem lumping many orders of the same thing to gain an incredible level of economy of scale.
This in return pushes prices way too low, lower than what most of you are used to getting in your countries.
Effective routing of raw materials is also a reason for cheap production costs in China.
I’ll admit that this one is a little quirky, but hey, China is poor from a natural resource standpoint.
The country produces very little no oil, barely enough to drive its domestic industry.
The same applies to metal.
Metal deposits are quite scarce in China.
You may wonder, how then does the country manage to produce so much electrical and electronic devices?
Which as we all know requires metal as raw material.
Well, the thing with China is that it imports much of what it produces with.
You see, usually, when you import a lot of raw material, it costs a lot of money.
China, however, has an extraordinary secret of maintaining the minimal cost for raw material importation.
Infrastructure!
Yes!
Demand for products tends to drive demand for raw material which in turn drives demand for infrastructure.
China textile industry
Proper infrastructure is needed to route raw materials effectively and cheaply.
Now, China has the infrastructure and system, and so raw material can flow in large batches and routed effectively to minimize cost.
Therefore at the end of the day, considering all elements, producing in China is cheaper.
This is why as I said numerous times in this guide, even top brands in America and Europe outsource their production to Chinese manufacturers.
Because they know just how cost efficient it is to produce their supply in China.
So is it worth it to produce in China?
Definitely yes!
At the end of the day, we all want to maintain a minimal cost of operation in our businesses.
This is the only way to stay afloat and of course, enjoy a reasonable profit margin.
So when you’re thinking of how much it might cost you to import clothes from China, as you can see, there’s a lot to consider.
From the cost of shipping, production to import duties and taxes: all these play a significant role in determining whether or not your import business will be profitable or not.
So again, try your best to maintain a minimal cost of importation.
However, keep in mind that certain factors tend to influence the cost of importing from China.
These include;
- Fluctuations in fuel prices and currency rates
- Poor weather conditions
- Political tensions
- Holidays,e. the Chinese holiday
- Seasons change
This, therefore, means that your costs will not always stay the same.
Chapter 5: How to Source for Quality Clothes in China
“How do I source for quality clothes in China?”
This is a question that I come across pretty often, and this is my take:
Most importers especially first-time importers take the whole process of importation for granted.
You don’t do due diligence in ensuring that you only source the best quality clothes.
So for you, that’s reading this guide today, I want to help you simply by showing you where and how to get quality clothes from China.
So read on.

Alibaba Textile

First things first, to source from Alibaba, you need to have an account whose details you’ll use to login to the site.
After that, you proceed to find the right product for you.
Now, there are two main ways to sort through the plethora of options on Alibaba.
The first option is to perform a search based on a product description,i.e.t-shirts.
If you search for “t-shirts” on Alibaba, you will get thousands of t-shirt results.
This leaves you with the hassle of sorting through products that may come from the same supplier.
A better approach would be first to find a reliable supplier.
From there, you can then decide whether to order from their current inventory or work with them to create a unique product.
So to find suppliers on Alibaba, go to the Alibaba site and change the search tab from products to suppliers.
When you do this, you’ll find suppliers that focus on making every product that you’re looking to source.
Alibaba search results
Now, when you search “t-shirts,” you’ll find companies instead of individual products.
But here comes the hardest part of this process: ensuring that your supplier is reliable.
Out of the plethora of suppliers on Alibaba that seem to have the supply capability that you need, only a handful of them will actually be able to fulfill your needs.
For this reason, I’ll show you three key steps to take to ensure reliability and trust.
- The first step is to initiate contact with selected suppliers. With this, you’ll be able to present to the supplier what you want and allow them to explain to you what they can offer.
When you do this, make sure that your communication remains simple and clear.
Overly complex communication can create confusion and possibly jeopardize a potential long-term relationship with the supplier.
- Do due diligence. Truthfully, you don’t need to trust a supplier just because they told you to.
You need to do background research to be sure that they are reliable and trusted.
For this, you can go to the internet and search for the supplier’s company.
Check if they have a website and if they’re listed on any trade shows and exhibitions.
Also, check if their contact and the physical address are legit.
If everything about them adds up, then possibly they are a trustworthy supplier.
- Follow up. The mistake that most importers do is find a supplier, order goods and then sit back and wait until they are told their order is ready.
No! You shouldn’t do this. Instead, make follow up with the supplier on the progress of your order.
At least, be in touch with your supplier once a week to ensure that your order processing is on track.
That’s it! If you follow these three steps when sourcing from Alibaba, you can hope for success.
· Get Best Clothes on AliExpress
Unless you have a guideline that you’re using, sourcing clothes from AliExpress can be pretty difficult.
Clothes on AliExpress
In this regard, here are some actionable steps that you can take to source quality clothes from AliExpress successfully:
1. Login to the site using your username and password. If you don’t have these, register on the site first.
2. Search for your preferred product using the search function. The best way to do this is to use the right keywords. One that will only give you relevant results since all of the suppliers on AliExpress has their own product focus. Using general keywords may not give you the results you’re looking for.
3. Review your search results. Here, you will get over one thousand search results that you’ll need to filter. Do this focusing on management certification. I.e., you can focus on suppliers with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or BSCI.
Suppliers with the above certifications usually perform better in terms of quality and compliance.
4. Review suppliers. Once you’ve filtered down your suppliers, its time you review their capability for supply.
For this, you check to find out if the supplier is capable of meeting your supply demands.
Also, check to see if they understand your product if they are specialized in supplying your kind of product.
Another thing is to check its quality compliance.
What international standards for clothes production do they comply to?
5. Review the product pages. You see many supplier list products that are not actually what they seem. Due to this, it is important to find out if the product listing is accurate.
At the end of the day, you want to ensure that the supplier can and is able to supply the product as listed on their page and to your requirements.
6. Select your supplier and make an order. Once you’re satisfied with a particular supplier and their product, go ahead and order.
Again, this is it for sourcing clothes from AliExpress.
· Visit the Textile and Apparel Trade Fair
Apparently, trade fairs are a no brainer for finding, vetting and getting suppliers.
And truthfully, there is no lack of tradeshows in the textile and apparel industry.
No doubt, finding suppliers and products on Alibaba and AliExpress is fairly straightforward.
But then, it is slow and can be pretty cumbersome at times.
China trade fair
With B2B marketplaces, you have to get individual samples sent to you to ascertain the quality of products.
As if that’s not enough, there is also a major communication slowdown because let’s being honest here, sending emails can be quite inefficient.
And if you’re in regions like Europe, America, Africa and even Australia?
Well, adding in the time difference leaves you with only a small window of time every day for communication.
So what about attending trade fairs?
Attending textile and apparel trade fairs allows you to communicate and see product samples first hand.
The best part is that you can see and touch all of the products without having to wait several days or weeks.
That’s is what trade fairs are all about.
You get to have everything in one location.
So if you’re seeking to venture into the import clothes from China business and can make it to fairs like the canton fair, don’t miss out.
Here there are no back and forth or delays in communication.
You generally don’t have to wait for samples to be made and sent to you for approval.
Everything is right there in one location and at your fingertips.
· Contact China Clothes Manufacturers Directly
Most large volume exporters prefer dealing directly with manufacturers.
But while it is usually the best approach to take if you want to avoid intermediaries, it requires a lot of time and effort.
Remember that nowadays, most things are manufactured in China because of the cheap cost of labor and raw materials.
Searching for clothes manufacturers
So if you think buying from manufacturers from other regions will give you better prices and quality, you’re mistaken.
This is because a majority of them outsource their production to Chinese manufacturers.
So again, you can trust to find any quality of clothes in China and all at competitive market prices.
Something else that you should know is that sourcing directly from manufacturers can help you get the best prices.
Remember however that while it may seem all rosy, there are a few hassles here and there.
These include;
- Communication breakdowns due to language Chinese manufacturers are not so fluent in English. They speak and even do business in either Mandarin or Cantonese. This means that you have to have a translator when speaking to manufacturers or just rely on written communication like mail.
- What you see may not be what you get. Truth be told, not many manufacturers have websites that you can rely on. Thus it’s hard to understand a product simply from the website’s description.
This is why you see importers requesting for samples to be made and sent to them before they make an order.
To be honest, all these takes time, a whole lot of time.
- Very high minimum order quantity demands. Unlike vendors, manufacturers tend to have very high MOQ demands because they make very little profit per product thus have to sell in large volume to get better margins.
So to order directly from manufacturers, you’ll have to do that in large quantities which is something you may not be well prepared for.
- Production is not easy Once you make an order, production may take a while before it’s complete — usually, a few weeks or months depending on your order quantity.
Clothes manufacturers in China
So, considering the challenges above, is it worth it to seek manufacturers directly?
Well, I say yes.
Because one, manufacturer prices are unbeatable.
And second, the upfront investment is worth it.
You see, once you establish a good relationship with your manufacturer, it becomes easy from then on.
You will be better placed to negotiate for even better prices.
You could even get your manufacturer to lower their MOQ demands.
In all this, you should keep one important thing in mind; that the right supplier is very critical to your business.
You shouldn’t make gambles when trying to find one.
One wrong move in choosing a supplier could mean endless delays, inflated expenses, or even potentially poor quality production
As such, you should always do due diligence when seeking for a clothes supplier in China.
This way, you can be sure that you’ll get the best quality clothes for you.
Once you do that, you can start thinking of how to ship the clothes from China to your destination.
Chapter 6: How to Ship Clothes from China
You have several options for shipping your clothing shipments from China.
There is the air freight shipping where you can opt for standard or express shipping.
There is also ocean shipping that accommodates FCL and LCL shipping.
Rail shipping is also an option for those of you shipping to Asia and parts of Europe.
And last but not least there is door to door and drop shipping options from China.
Which are the best options to ship your goods from China?
It’s hard to tell at this point depending on some things including type and volume of goods, shipping destination, the urgency of shipping, etc.
You need to choose a suitable shipping option for clothing from China based on your current shipping needs.
Allow me to explain a bit about these shipping options so that you can know which one to use, when and why you should use them.
6.1. International Express and Air Freight
When shipping goods from China to global destinations, you have two major options; air freight and sea freight.
Let’s start with air freight from China.
Air freight is the fastest yet most expensive means of cargo transportation from China.
Under it, there are two modes of shipping.
There is the standard air shipping mode and the express shipping mode.
Standard air shipping is suitable to use when you’re shipping goods that are 150 -500 Kg.
Express shipping
By standard air, delivery takes approximately 3-7 days depending on the shipping distance.
Express shipping, on the other hand, is much faster than standard air freight means.
This method takes about 1-3 days to deliver items from China to overseas destinations.
You should opt for express shipping when you need something more than a basic delivery service.
This is when you’re shipping high-value items like shipping documents and clothing samples.
As I said, express shipping service for small and urgent deliveries is fast and economical.
Popular companies that offer this service across the globe include FedEx, DHL, UPS, and EMS.
Any of these companies and others within the same niche can provide you with fast, affordable and reliable express shipping services from China.
Note that express shipping is best suitable for shipping smaller packages.
This, however, does not mean that you can’t ship large volume items via this method.
You can!
Only that in this case, the cost of shipping will be very high.
Thus, you should only consider it when you need to deliver items very urgently.
Otherwise, use standard air freight means.
Or, you can consider ocean freight options.
6.2. LCL and FCL in Sea Freight
After air freight, the other means of transportation from China is ocean freight.
This is where you ship items in containers and by sea.
Ocean freight from China is slow but very cost effective.
By water, you can ship any amount of clothing that you want to any destination in the world.
Compared to air freight, the cost of shipping by sea is very minimal.
The only downside is that you may have to wait up from several weeks to months to receive your clothing imports from China.
Note that the delivery duration is dependent on your shipping destination.
So for instance, if you’re shipping from China to the US, you’ll have to wait at least 35 days for goods to arrive.
If shipping to the Philippines, that’ll take about 9 days for you to receive your ocean freight from China.
Now,
Ocean shipping has two options; LCL(less than container load) and FCL (full container load).
In other words, you can rent an entire container to ship in your goods (FCL).
Or, you can share container space with other shippers to your destination (LCL).
You should opt for the former if your shipment is large enough to fill up an entire container 20ft. or 40 ft.
Or, if you don’t want to mix your goods with that of other shippers.
For LCL, you choose this if you’re shipping a smaller volume of goods and don’t mind sharing shipping space.
Note however that while sharing space allows you to ship lesser goods at an affordable price, there are risks to it.
First, there is the risk of losing your goods during loading and unloading.
Secondly, LCL shipping involves lots of handling where goods could get damaged in the process.
Thirdly, LCL shipping requires a lot of work.
Consolidating and de-consolidating shipments are no easy task.
Also, tracking an LCL shipment is pretty hard since it is only a part of many shipments in one container.
Besides, consolidation means that several shippers pack goods into one container.
If one shipper’s items are not availed for loading on time, then delays in delivery become inevitable.
Also if someone else’s shipment arrives with problems, i.e., damaged or lost, it may cause your shipment to delay.
This only means that FCL shipping would be better for you if you can’t take all these risks and if you have the means.
6.3. Rail Freight
If you’re shipping to Europe, Russia or central Asia, rail freight from China is a good option for you.
Rail network
Shipping by rail is faster than ocean freight and cheaper than air freight.
It is actually a good alternative for those of you that can’t keep up with the slow speeds of sea freight and the high costs of air shipping.
The best part?
You can ship FCL or LCL with rail freight.
It all depends on the volume of your imports, and mostly shipping destination.
6.4. Door to Door Shipping
Other than booking air or ocean shipping from your shipping agent, you can also book door to door shipping services.
It is an excellent solution for importing clothes from China.
This is especially if you don’t have the time to indulge in the importation process.
So how does it work?
Well, door to door deliveries is pretty simple, and convenient.
What you do is identify products and find a reliable shipping agent.
Door to door shipping
Once you order products, the shipping agent will pick them from your supplier’s door and deliver them at your doorstep.
Here, you have very minimal responsibilities as the forwarder takes care of the entire shipping process.
The forwarder takes care of paperwork, handling, transportation, as well as customs clearance.
You on the other hand only assumes the responsibility of the goods once they get to your doorstep.
Opting for the door to door service is actually great as it helps you avoid middlemen transactions.
These tend to inflate rates that soar up your overall shipping costs.
So if you want to maintain a clean cost of shipping, then door to door delivery is the way to go.
6.5. Drop Shipping
For those of you in the online retailing business, you may want to consider drop shipping from China.
You see, with drop shipping, you don’t need any additional outlay for inventory.
All you need is to create a good rapport with suppliers and your forwarder, and you’re good to go.
Dropshipping
By doing this, you’ll be able to order goods in quantities as little as one item and have them delivered directly to your customers.
That is what drop shipping is all about.
You don’t get to see or touch the product at any point.
You also don’t have to deal with the tedious shipping and importation procedures from China.
As long as you find reliable and trustworthy suppliers and a good freight forwarder, the process is completely hassle-free.
All the above options are hassle free but only if you follow their due processes.
Among these processes is having the proper documentation, which is our next topic of discussion.
Chapter 7: Documents needed to import clothes from China
Paperwork and documentation are vital to the successful importation of clothes from China.
If you have the right papers, the process will be hassle-free.
Otherwise, you will have to deal with issues of delay, rejection of entry, and so many problems with customs officials.
Import/export documents need to be filed and provided at the right times and to the right authorities.
Usually, for imports from China, you will need to present the paperwork at the origin port in China.
And, at the destination port in your country.
This means that your paperwork has to be ready and available before the shipping commences.
Who then prepares import documentation?
Well, it depends on the terms of your sale contract.
It could be the supplier or you – just refer to the terms of your contract.
In other cases, you will need to work on the documents by yourself.
Regardless of who does the paperwork, these are the main documents that you need to import clothes from China;
1) Commercial invoice
A commercial invoice is a receipt of sale between you and your supplier in China.
Your supplier will issue this document immediately your order is ready.
Commercial invoice
You’ll use the document to pay for goods as it details the number of goods ordered and their amount payable.
A commercial invoice, note, often denotes all the order details.
This information is very important as customs officials will need it to clear your goods.
Please note:
A commercial invoice is not a standard document.
There is no standard way of preparing it.
All that is needed is that the final document conforms to the regular shipping practices.
You also need to ensure that the details of the commercial invoice are accurate and clear.
A commercial invoice must show the following;
- Name and address of both the buyer and seller
- Order number
- Purchase date
- Payment method
- Terms of sale
- Transaction currency
- Bill of lading/airway bill number
- Package dimensions
- Weight
- Marks
- Measures
- Origin and delivery location
All this information is necessary for the smooth shipment of your goods from China to your destination.
Also, your supplier’s signature on the document is quite critical.
So make sure he signs it before handing the document to you.
And when he eventually does, make a copy of the document so that you submit the original and keep the copy in case you need it.
2) Packing list
As simple as it sounds, a packing list is actually a very crucial document in the import from China process.
The list simply details the contents of a shipment.
It enables customs authorities to know everything that is included in your shipment.
Parking list
This includes the type of goods, quantity, packaging, etc.
Aside from custom verification of shipment, a packing list can also come in handy during the inspection.
Thus, it is important that you have it and that the information provided in it is correct.
Remember too that with a packing list, you can verify that your supplier delivered what you ordered.
3) Bill of lading document/airway bill
As I mentioned earlier, there are two means of shipping imports from China; air and sea freight.
Now, in either of these shipping methods, a bill of lading document is essential.
It is known as a bill of lading (BOL) document in sea freight.
In air freight, the document is known as an airway bill.
This document, please note is often used as proof of transaction between a shipper and the shipping company.
It shows that as a shipper, you’ve contracted the carrier to move your goods from China to your destination country.
Bill of lading
Also, a BOL or airway bill acts as proof of ownership of goods.
Note; this document is usually available in two forms.
A negotiable bill of lading shows that ownership of goods can be bought, sold or traded while goods are still in transit.
A non-negotiable one, on the other hand, means that ownership can’t be sold, bought or even traded.
Now, the BOL and airway bill documents both serve the same purpose.
However, they differ in one thing; a BOL is available in two forms as stated above.
An airway bill, on the other hand, is only issued in the non-negotiable form.
Thus, you cannot sell, transfer or trade in ownership when goods are still in transit.
4) Import permit
To be able to import certain items into a country, you’ll need to provide an import permit.
So if clothing or certain types of clothing require special authorization from your customs authority, you’ll need to get an import permit.
Import permit
Otherwise, you risk fines and penalties imposed by customs due to a lack of compliance with the set customs rules and regulations.
5) Certificate of origin
A c/o as it is often denoted is a document that indicates the country of origin of a product import.
Certificate of origin
Origin, in this case, is the product’s country of manufacture, production or processing.
To import clothes from China thus, some countries require a C/O to verify the type and origin of goods you’re importing.
6) Insurance certificate
An insurance certificate acts as proof of insurance for goods.
It shows the type and limit of coverage as well as the insurers details, policy number and policies’ effective periods.
Well, these are the main documents you will need to successfully ship your clothing imports from China.
Insurance
Remember though that this is not all, just the mains ones.
Many other documents are country specific.
As such, it is wise if you confirm what documents you’ll need to import clothes from China to your country.
Talking of country, what are some of the regions that you can import clothes from China to and how?
Let’s find out below.
Chapter 8: Importing clothes from China to Global Destinations
You know that China has become a global source for clothing imports today.
Importers from all over the world get their clothing supplies from Chinese manufacturers and suppliers.
This means that when importing clothes from China, you shouldn’t worry about them reaching you.
All you need to do is find the right product, locate a shipping agent and wait for the delivery of the goods.
As an importer, you can get clothes from China to any of the following destinations;
· Importing Clothes fromChina to North America
North America is made up of the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
These three are huge nations.
And, despite some of them ranking as economic giants, they still make up a significant market for Chinese products.
Shipping routes
Yes, you think a country like the US consumes only what it produces?
No dear, it doesn’t.
You’ll be surprised to learn that despite being an economic giant, the US imports a large share of its consumables.
As a matter of fact, recent statistics indicate that theUS imported USD 2.409 trillion worth of goods from around the globe in 2017.
And in 2018, the country’s total imports amounted to USD 1.938 trillion by September.
Surprised? Wait till you hear this; of the 2017 value, about 45.7% were imported from Asia.
Currently, China is the US’s largest goods trading partner.
But we’re not talking about the US alone. Canada and Mexico to import a whole lot of goods from China.
Clothing makes up a great deal of these imports.
The bottom line, therefore, is that importing from China to North America is good business.
The best part?
The infrastructure is very well set out.
You can shop online and have clothes delivered to you anywhere in North America.
Or, you can simplyvisitChina and source your items personally, this, however, is only wise if you’re a large volume importer.
Shipping sourced goods are also very easy.
There are very many companies that can help you do this.
Besides, you have lots of shipping options as outlined in chapter 6 of this guide.

In South America, Brazil dominates the market share.
China to North America
Nonetheless, countries like Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia are also competitive markets for imports from China.
So as you seek to remain competitive in the import clothes from China business, there are a few things to note.
The first thing is that the South American market is a bit complex.
If you’re not informed, language barriers and complex customs regulations can cause costly delays and increase expenses.
Secondly, as a world leader in trade, China is one of the largest trade partners for imports in South America.
Additionally, the possibility of several free trade agreements with China may open doors to eliminate tariffs and facilitate trade in this region.
It will allow for better competition among the South American countries.
As such, you should take advantage of customs brokerage firms, market research and the time now to ensure business success.
Thirdly, there are some key things that you should do and have to be able to conduct business successfully in South America.
Among these is having the right documentation to avoid scuffles with South American customs regulators
Another thing; Research! Research!Research!
As I said, this is a market that’s filled with lots of complexities.
As such, you’ll need to utilize all the resources you can find to ensure your business success here.
For instance, you can use customs brokerage firms for area-specific guidance to South American customs.
These firms will help you understand the South American customs regulations and ensure speedy delivery of goods.
Well, if you’ve been thinking of importing clothes from China to sell in South America, now is the time.
Trust me, compared to the cons; the benefits are immense.

Importing clothes from China to East Asia is mean meat.
Because one, East Asian countries like Indonesia and the Philippines are geographically close to China.
China to Philippines
Secondly, the geographical proximity makes it is easy for importers to visit China and source products personally.
This makes it easy for East Asian importers to find good quality products and avoid online scams.
That aside, the demand for affordable clothes in East Asia is just as huge as the demand in Africa.
This means that when you import cheap clothes from China, you can easily resell them at a good profit in East Asia.
Besides, the Asian trade agreements favor you as export/import processes are made favorable to boost trade in the region.
My advice is that as you seek to embark importing clothes from China to EastAsia, pay attention to these key elements.
One, ensure to import good quality products if you want to maintain a loyal customer base.
Two, pay attention to your country’s customs rules and regulations on importation.

Last but not least, the cost of importing clothes from China to East Asia is a crucial point of consideration.
You have to ensure that you maintain a minimal cost of operation at least to be able to enjoy a substantial profit margin.
This is especially if you’re dealing in original designer clothes.
· Importing Clothes from China to Australia
No doubt made-in-China clothes are very popular and price competitive.
By importing these clothes to Australia, you can easily beat your competition by offering customers more competitively priced products.
Also, they allow you to maintain a higher profit margin despite the market being overly competitive.
China to Australia
The problem, however, is that while importing clothing from China has all these perks; it’s not easy.
Why?
Well, it is because not all of you can speak Mandarin or Cantonese, so the language barrier will be a major problem.
Also, Australia is over 7000 kilometers from China.
Thus, traveling to China may be very costly especially for a startup business.
You may also experience challenges importing clothes from China to Australia if you don’t know the paperwork.
And, if you if, you’re not familiar with B2B marketplaces like Alibaba and Aliexpress.
What’s my point?
Importing from China is a step by step process that must be done very carefully.
You don’t just wake up and start importing.
No!
You need to have a plan that includes;
- The type of clothes you’re importing and where/how to source them
- Incoterm
- Mode of shipping
- A freight forwarding agent
- Customs broker
- Transit time among other things.
When you have these things figured out, trust me importing clothes from China to Australia is a breeze.
· Importing clothes from China to Europe
Why do most of you feel that importing from China to Europe is complicated? Especially clothes?
Well, I don’t share the same opinion.
Okay, I understand the fact that Europe is home to some of the world’s top clothing brands and designers.
But still, there is a market gap that the local European industry can’t match.
We all know the cost of made in Europe clothing.
They don’t come cheap.
China to Europe
And we also know, not everyone can afford designer clothing made in Europe.
So as a business person, wanting to fill this gap should be your top most priority.
China is an open place for sourcing cheap clothing and reselling at a good price.
Your customers may be skeptical about the quality, but trust me, once you tend to their quality demands, they will be ‘bought for life.’
In other words, quality is very critical for the European market.
You hack this, and your business is set for impressive growth.
Note that even those top designers you see or hear about in Europe, a majority of them outsource their designs to Chinese manufacturers.
So really, there isn’t anything like bad or poor quality stuff in China.
It all depends on what the customer can afford.
They can afford original designer clothes; you can get these in China.
Do they want quality but affordable clothing? Still, you can get these in China.
So don’t worry about the product.
The only worry you should have is how to ship your clothing imports from China.
And, primarily, how to clear them at the European customs authorities because bluntly, this is a hassle.
This chapter shows you that importing clothes from China is not limited to any specific locations.
