Tank Container – The Ultimate Buying Guide

1. What Are Tank Containers And How Can You Practically Utilize Them?

A Tank Container is a type of Intermodal Shipping Containers which is mostly used for the transportation of liquids, gases, and powders in bulk quantity.

They are sometimes named ‘Tanktainer’ as well.

A Tank Container is built upon the ISO standards to make the transportation mode of the container easy and feasible.

They are most of the times made from stainless steel with a protective layer of Aluminum and polyurethane.

They are specially insulated from inside so that no spillage or contamination can occur in the material which is being carried from one place to another.

The Tank Container is fixed inside an open steel frame which is also made according to the ISO standards with 6 metres in length, 2.4 metres in width and approx. 2.5 metres in height.

The capacity which a Tank Container can hold up to is according to the sizes.

There are different sizes of Tank Containers and sometimes the sizes are different from that of the ISO standards.

A Tank Container built on the ISO Standard can hold up to 17,500 – 26,000 litres or 4,600 – 6,900 US gal.

The other Tank Containers sizes which are not according to the ISO Standards can be of the capacity ranging up to 40,000 litres.

A Tank Container can be used for both hazardous and non-hazardous materials or products.

The ISO Standards Tank Containers that are supposed to transport hazardous products are normally passed through safety standards.

Foodstuffs, Wines & Spirits, Fruit juices, Sweet Oils, Chemicals, Fuels, Toxic substances and Gases are normally transported using Tank Containers.

2. What Are The Uses of A Tank Container?

Tank Containers have their unique importance in the shipping industry as they are specifically used for an entirely separate purpose which was almost undoable before the Tank Containers emerged as the most viable solution in the market.

Previously the transportation of liquids and gasses was a much more difficult and time taking task as there was no efficient way of transporting liquids or gasses in bulk without breaks.

Now the time has changed and with the passage of time more and more efficient ways to transport liquids, gasses and even powder products in bulk quantity became easier with the help of Tank Containers.

Any liquid, gasses or powder product can now be transported via tank Container.

It can be hazardous or non-hazardous, it can be foodstuff or chemicals all can be transported from one place to another.

Most commonly the following items are shipped through Tank Containers:

  • Foodstuffs
  • Wines & Spirits
  • Fruit juices
  • Sweet Oils
  • Chemicals
  • Fuels
  • Toxic substances
  • Gases

There are different types and sizes of Tank Containers available for the transportation of different goods such as Food-grade Tank which can only be used for food-related products.

Similarly, a T14 ISO Tank Container is used for hazardous chemicals like HCL and Zinc Chloride.

These specialised Tanks are supposed to be clear al the safety check before they are available to use for transporting any type of product.

3. What Advantages and Disadvantages Of A Tank Container?

The concept of the Tank Containers was introduced by an engineer in Europe around the 1950s.

They proved to be super-efficient in transporting difficult goods such as Liquids and Gasses.

They were also cost-effective as compared to other mediums to transport liquids such as drums.

The Tank Containers were more economical as compared to drums because of the low cost per litre.

Moreover, the Tank Containers are loaded once and then they are easily unloaded through the valve at the destination while in the case of using drums, it’s a time taking task to first fill them one by one and then load them onto a truck or trailer and then do the reverse for unloading.

Tank Containers are also safer for transporting goods to a distant place like to another city as they are more stable and balanced because of their frame while loaded onto the truck.

One more advantage of using a Tank Container is that, in the field of manufacturing, the standby time of the product is reduced as the product can be loaded directly in the Tank Container and then it’s ready to be shipped as compared to the conventional method of using drums.

Amongst the very few disadvantages of Tank Containers, the most commonly known one is that the Tank Containers needs to be cleaned and properly checked according to the standards before shipping the goods or minor irresponsibility can cause huge loss to any business as a result of contamination or leakage.

And the last point, the Tank Containers are only suitable for bulk quantity shipment.

If anyone wants to ship a small quantity, then it may be costly or even impossible.

4. How Much A Tank Container Can Hold Up To?

Tank Containers are built according to different global size standards and they are used according to the requirements as every time the requirements can vary.

The Tank Containers that are made according to the ISO Standards are used in standard conditions or requirements.

ISO Tank Containers are made under the fix 20ft standard frame.

The frame of a Tank Container maybe approx. 20ft long, 8ft wide and 8ft high.

So the ISO Tank Container built according to the above-mentioned sizes can hold up to 17,500 litres to 25000 litres or 4,600 to 6,900 U.S. gal.

There are different sizes as well available in different markets around the world.

The Tank Containers were first introduced in Europe and then the use of Tank Containers spread throughout the world.

So the Tank Containers that are not according to the ISO Standards, have a little more capacity as compared to the ISO Tank Containers.

They can hold up to 40,000 litres or 7,100 U.S. gal and above.

5. What Transportation Mode Suits The Best For Tank Containers; Sea, Land Or Air?

A Tank Container is mostly used to transport liquids and gasses from one place to another.

Any liquid or gas product need special infrastructure when shipping them in huge quantity.

Before the introduction of the Tank Containers in the markets, special drums, barrels and cylinders were used to transport liquids and gasses in bulk quantity, but they were not sufficient enough to cater all the needs of a modern-day business.

However, Tank Containers did turn the situation for modern-day businesses.

Tank Container allowed the businesses to reduce the standby time for a product, hence, making the complete supply chain of the product faster and easier.

This feature of the Tank Containers allowed the businesses to grow huge as they were now able to improve their overall efficiency.

Similarly, the use of Tank Container also allowed the customers to ship their liquids and gasses in bulk quantity through ships as well.

The most suitable mode of transportation for a Tank Container is through ships (by the ocean) and trailers (by road).

Tank Containers on a Railway

The opportunity to transport the liquid and gas goods via Ocean made the shipping process even more economical for the customers.

A Tank Container also has the capability of stacking it onto other Tank Container (max 5 to 6 tiers).

For short-distance transport of liquid and gasses in bulk quantity, trucks and trailers are also used.

Watch a Tank Container being transported through Railway on the following link:

6. How Economical Are The Tank Containers As Compared To Other Containers In The Market?

The Tank Containers are purposely built to transport the liquid, gasses and powder products in bulk quantity.

Their invention or availability in the market has made it much easier for modern-day businesses to ship those products that need special care while transporting from one place to another.

The use of Tank Containers has made the transportation process more economical and cost-effective by allowing the customers or business owners to save the extra spendings on the transportation of their goods in small parts/packages.

A Tank Container can transport all of the product in one cycle.

In comparison to the previously used methods of transportation such as drums or barrels, the Tank Container is much more economical because of lower labour cost and quick transporting time.

If we compare the cost of using drums with the cost of using Tank Containers, we can easily conclude that Tank Containers are a cheaper and effective way of transportation.

A Tank Container can hold up to 26,000 litres and if we want to transport this amount of product through drums, so we would be needing almost 128 drums with 205 litres of capacity.

The amount required to fill these 128 drums and then load them onto a vehicle needs labour, time and more effort, which comes with money.

While using a Tank Container, we can need to fill it once using the valve and that too without much labour and then we would only load it once onto a vehicle.

So in the end using a Tank Container for transporting bulk quantity is much more economical as compared to other containers.

7. What Are The Safety And Security Checks Necessary For Goods To Be Transported Through ISO Tank Containers?

The Tank Containers are used for the specific purpose of transporting the liquid, gasses or powder goods from one place to another.

These kinds of goods require a bit extra attention and care while transporting them.

The Tank Containers are filled with the product through the safety valves attached to both the upper and lower part of the Tank Container.

There are some specific guidelines to fill a Tank Container with care.

A Tank Container is never filled till the top, rather they are filled to the max of 80% of the space present inside the Tank.

Similarly, a Tank Container is never filled with less than 20% of the available capacity of the Tank.

The Tank Container is also checked for any spills or leakage and pressure vessels before making it available for a new shipment.

The Tank Container is also washed properly to avoid any contamination of the presently transporting product with the older products which has been previously transported from one place to another.

For hazardous good’s transportation, the Tank Containers are passed through some compulsory checks without which no container is sent forward for a shipment.

8. What Are The Different Types Of Tank Containers Available In The Market?

Different types of Tank Container are available in the market with some major differences in each model or type.

Every type of Tank Container is used for a specific purpose for which they are built.

There are 5 most commonly known types of Tank Containers available in the market to date.

Baffle Tanks are specifically built for products with a very high gravity that is normally transported with only 80% of the Container filled.

  • This Baffle Tank helps in transporting these type of goods with high gravity providing the max possible stability hence allowing the customer to transport even more litres of their product in one tank.
  • Lined Tanks are used to transport highly corrosive and pure products with additional safety systems inbuilt in the tank.

Level detection sensors are also fitted in the tank to tell the level of the tank to avoid overfilling.

The Lined tanks are also equipped with a GPS tracking system.

  • Heated Tanks are used when a product needs to be kept heated while the transportation period. They have steam, water and electrical heating system which helps the product in maintaining required temperatures.
  • Cool Tank Containers are used to transport many pharmaceutical products which need to be kept in extremely cold temperatures while transportation.

Fruit juice, milk and other general-purpose liquids are transported through Cool Tank Containers.

  • Gas Tanks are zinc lined containers, that are used to transport non-refrigerant gases.

9. Are The Tank Containers Stackable?

A Tank Container solved the problem of transporting a bulk amount of products at low costs.

The use of Tank Container has made the business make much more profits than ever before just because of its low cost of transport.

Lower cost of transport is only made possible by shipping the Tank Containers through Ocean which reduces the travelling cost.

This travelling cost is reduced because hundreds of containers are loaded on a ship and then they are transported to the desired port in a specific city or country.

SO the travelling expense is divided and the overall cost is reduced by ocean shipping.

Moreover, the hundreds of containers are adjusted due to their capability of stacking the containers onto each other.

Extra space is saved on a ship by stacking the containers on top of each other.

A Tank Container can also be stacked easily onto any other Container.

This is possible because the Tank Container has a strong frame.

The max limits to which the containers are allowed to be stacked are 5 or sometimes 6 levels.

A frame of a Tank Container is built to hold up to this much weight when stacked.

10. Why ISO Tank Containers Are Preferred To Carry Bulk Liquids?

The demand for Tank Container in the global market is increasing day by day as the need of transporting a bulk quantity of liquid, gasses and powder products has increased.

The only economical easiest and convenient way of transporting liquid, gasses and powder goods is a Tank Container.

They are much more cost-effective and economical than other options such as drums or Flexitanks.

Flexitanks

Flexitanks

They do not require extra time, efforts and labour to fill it up with the product first and then transporting it.

The handling cost is also reduced due to the perfect design of the Tank Containers for handling bulk quantity products.

So in the end, a customer saves up to 30% of the money by using a Tank Container.

The shipping of hazardous material or product by rail and cargo is safer than shipping them through public routes.

The Tank Containers can also help you in maintaining a certain temperature of the product inside it (cold and hot both temperatures).

They can also be stacked onto each other up to 6 levels which give us more storage.

11. How Are Tank Containers Handled; Loading And Unloading?

A Tank Container is usually prepared for shipping a product in bulk quantity.

There is a pre-trip inspection done to avoid any potential threat to the whole process of shipping a liquid, gas or powder product.

It is made sure that the tank has according to the standards and needs for the shipment of a product.

After the Tank Container fully cleaned and it is made sure that no previous material or waste is inside, it is filled with the product through a “filling port” which is present at the top of a vessel.

Then after filling it up to 80% of the capacity of the tank it is sealed and all required settings such as the temperature are set.

After the Tank Container has reached the destination it is then unloaded by draining the product through the bottom outlet into a pipe to the storage area.

Then after unloading, the tank is sent for cleaning and inspection for another shipment.

12. What Are Challenges Faced By ISO Tank Containers?

The Tank Containers are widely used around the globe for shipping products or goods such as chemicals, solvents, oils gasses and many other such types of products.

When a Tank Container is used many times or is too old in the market, so some of the Tanks have the problem of have previously shipped material stuck inside the tank.

Some liquids also do solidify inside the tank which is very difficult to remove.

This causes contamination in the product which is very harmful to businesses.

To remove the older solid remains in the Tank, a process of pressurizing the vessel with air at the top vent is done which cleans most of the tank.

But, this process is sometimes dangerous as it can put cracks onto the main shell of the Tank Container and can also result in leakage.

Moreover, some Tank Containers also have built-in systems of heating or cooling, which is operated by providing electricity to the Tank while travelling (on-road truck or ship).

13. What Are The Benefits Of ISO Tank Containers For Chemical Hauling?

Transportation of chemicals with care and safety is a huge task which is now done with quite an ease just because of the introduction of Tank Containers in the market.

A chemical can be hazardous as well as non-hazardous, but both require special care to be able to transport them to their desired destination.

Now the shippers are also concerned to reduce the cost, carbon footprints with the safety of the container.

The shippers are convinced to use Tank Containers because of their environment-friendly nature.

According to a report by the International Tank Container Organisation, a shipment by Tank Container leaves 50% fewer carbon-footprints as compared to a drummed shipment.

Moreover, the Tank Containers are mostly shipped through the means of ocean or rail, which provides better safety than through public roads.

Public roads are can be full of unsafe driving routes and accidents which can lead to even bigger loss than just an accident or product inventory loss.

Chemical transport through Tank Container is also done to take advantage of cheaper shipping rates and availability of extra space in them as well.

14. How A Tank Container Is Prepared Before Its Journey To Its Destination?

A Tank Container always has a risk of any safety breach before a final yes for a shipment.

A Tank Container is needed to be checked properly for some of the main key points before choosing it for the shipment of your products.

A Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) is carried out to make sure of those points which play an important role in the whole shipping process.

Pre-Trip Inspection

Pre-Trip Inspection

The first point which is checked before the journey of a Tank Container is that all the equipment such as valves, frame and manholes.

All must be in proper working condition before anything is decided.

The main vessel of the tank is also checked for any unwanted leakage which can occur on the ship or rail while its transit.

The tank is also cleaned properly before it is allowed to be filled with the product.

It is also made sure that the tank’s frame is according to the ISO and CEN specifications.

An overall feasibility check is also done to ensure that the Tank Container is fulfilling the requirements such as temperature controls.

15. What Kind Of Goods Can Be Transported Through A Tank Container?

The Tank containers are cylindrical steel vessels that are held within a standard frame according to ISO standards and are used to deliver products that can be hazardous and non-hazardous.

Just like the standard ISO shipping containers the tank containers are also multimodal containers, primarily used for the transportation of bulk liquids, gases and powders.

Tank containers are typically used for shipping foodstuffs, spirits and wines, fruits juices, sweet oils, chemicals, fuels, toxic substances and gases etc.

Every existing hazardous chemical has its own distinctive UN number allocated to it and only those chemicals, which are suitable to be shipped through the tank container are assigned with an additional ‘T’ to their respective codes in the provided table and this will indicate which type of tank container will be used to ship a specific chemical.

It is suggested as a precautionary measure that the tank container should be filled at least up to 80% of its capacity so that the surging of the dangerous liquids is prevented during transportation.

However, they should also not be filled more than 90% of the tank container’s capacity or else there will be not enough space for the thermal expansion of the contents.

The development of the Tank containers in the past years has allowed the shipping of many types of products ranging from, but not limited to, food-grade liquids (portable), non-hazardous and hazardous aqueous materials, which can include corrosives, explosives, toxics and flammables.

16. How To Maintenance The Tank Container?

Tanks are no exception to maintenance; even the newest and most refined equipment requires its maintenance.

It is important to keep the equipment in a good state of repair to guarantee the efficient operation of the tank containers.

The tank containers, which are used for international shipping, must conform to the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) standards to keep the container safe.

If the maintenance of the tank container is not properly done then there is a high chance that it will cause expensive long-term repairs, devalue the cost of the container aggressively and there might be a potential loss of shipment products.

Hence, it is highly recommended to comply with precautionary maintenance.

According to the CSC standards it is required to develop a maintenance system that shows how the tank container will be inspected for any anomalies, they will be examined and then operate the maintenance procedure on the container.

This system will include the frame of the tank, its connection to the pressure vessel and the avoidance of the tank’s service items being lost.

The maintenance and refurbishment of the valves and the hatches are also included.

The maintenance of the tank containers includes:

  • Proper impulsive cleaning of the tank container from solid cargo residues from both the inside and outside surfaces, using necessary reagents

  • Elimination of the dangerous cargo residues with proper decontamination and degasification techniques
  • External repair of tank containers
  • Routine leakage and pressure tests
  • Polishing of the tank’s wall
  • Servicing of both the valves; stop and pressure relief valves
  • Restoring and levelling the container floors and walls
  • Repairing any deformation in the tank’s frame
  • Patching up any container holes and filling up the cracks

18. What Is The Average Life Expectancy Of A Tank Container?

The Tank containers can have a large lifespan of about thirty-five years.

However, considering normal circumstances a tank container is designed to live an economic lifespan of about twenty years.

During its life, the tank container is used aggressively over and over again.

So after each consignment, the tank container is cleaned thoroughly which in return decreases its lifespan as you can imagine that there will come a point when due to so much cleaning the tank container will start to rust.

Tank containers are often re-manufactured to prolong their life past twenty years.

If you can get twenty years out of a single piece of a tank container, then it is very simple to get a handsome amount of return on your investment.

The tank container’s lifespan depends upon its usages like in what type of business it is being used in, what type of goods are transported in it and is the driver of the truck or the owner of the container looking after it, giving it proper maintenance.

If the tank container is used in a country where most of the year there is moisture in the air, then there are high chances that the container might be rusted, which will in return decrease the life of a swap body container.

Whereas if the tank container is used in a country where most of the year the weather is dry then there are fewer chances of it getting rust, hence increasing its life.

19. What Sizes According To ISO Standards Are Available For Tank Containers?

The tanks of the ISO tank containers have to be manufactured following the international regulations and are needed to be inspected and certified accordingly.

All ISO containers must meet such requirements, such as height, weight, and reliability, and be ready for their intended use.

These containers are made of stainless steel and have a variety of protective layers around them.

Different skins may be used depending on the cargo type.

On top of the container, there is a manhole with at least one valve and another valve on the bottom.

Since ISO tanks are made to ISO specifications, the structure on which the tank rests is about 6 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, and between 2.4 and 2.5 meters high.

ISO tanks come in a variety of sizes and types and can hold anything between 21,000 to 40,000 litres of liquid.

About 95% of the Tank containers are usually manufactured to 20ft dimensions, but they are also available in 10ft, 30ft, 40ft, and 45ft lengths.

These tank containers can be transported using modern intermodal transportation options such as cargo ships, rail lines, and trucks, which is allowed due to the characteristics of the ISO frame.

This adaptability makes it possible to move certain cargoes to locations all over the world in a secure, reliable and cost-effective manner.

20. How Do Tank Containers Affect The Environment?

Shipping affects the environment in terms of air pollution, water pollution, acoustic pollution, and oil pollution.

Marine time shipping is responsible for more than 18% of some air pollutants.

Carbon footprints are by far the most well-known indicator of environmental influence.

A carbon footprint is the total amount of ‘carbon’ (short for greenhouse gases, the most common of which is carbon dioxide) released by a product during its lifetime.

Usually, a 24-tonne of tank container shipment, travelling from Asia to Western Europe, emits a carbon footprint of 422g of CO2 per kg of the product being shipped.

This is less than the carbon footprint of producing a chemical, for example, where the footprints typically range from 1 to 4 kg CO2 per kg of the product.

The tank containers affect the environment not only through global warming but also through ozone depletion, photochemical oxidation, eutrophication and eco-toxicity.

An overall assessment of how the environment is affected can be performed by an evaluation method known as life cycle assessment (LCA), measured in ‘eco points’.

The greater the environmental impact created, the more the eco-points received.

LCA represents the sum of all environmental effects encountered over the complete lifespan of a product, including global warming.

Using the same example as mentioned above, the 24-tonne tank container shipment that emits a carbon footprint of 422g of CO2 per kg has a score of 59.2 eco-points per ton of the product shipped.

This number is negligible on its own but when compared to passenger car transport; it shows that tank containers comparatively have a lower environmental effect.

The ISO tank containers are the most environmentally friendly form of shipment in their category.

It has a long lifetime and emits about half the amount of carbon dioxide as compared to drummed shipment on some long-haul routes.

21. How ISO Tank Containers Make Transport More Sustainable In Terms Of Manufacturing?

From manufacturing to operation, sustainability is an integral part of an ISO tank container’s life cycle.

Tank containers are made in specialized plants in areas where there is a need for at least the initial bulk liquid cargo transport to economically place the container to the buyer’s location of need, enabling manufacturing economy of scale and access to export cargo.

Furthermore, regional plants can be found all over the world, mainly for the manufacture of tank containers to meet local needs.

Manufacturing plants are focused to take advantage of locally sourced construction materials (e.g. stainless steel suppliers), hence minimizing the transportation’s effect.

Tank container designs are primarily needed to ensure maximal security therefore the tank shell is manufactured of ductile stainless steel and is encased in a carbon steel frame ensuring high tensile strength.

The vessel is manufactured to the highest standards and designed in accordance with the ASME pressure vessel code allowing it to withstand test pressures of 6 bar or more.

The ISO modular frame allows the tank container to be lifted, stacked and transported safely on standard intermodal transport systems.

The tank containers are insulated to maintain cargo temperature, which in return improves its efficiency.

Maintaining the temperature of the tank container eliminates the cost of reheating.

Insulation and its outer protective layering create a shield against accidents.

Sustainable materials are used in the manufacturing of the tank containers; its frame is made up of carbon steel, the tank container itself is made up of stainless steel, the materials used can be recycled at the end of their lifespan.

Modern designs and materials have enabled to reduce of the empty weight of the tank container.

22. Can You Transport Crude Oil Through A Tank Container?

The tank containers for transporting crude oil and by-products are distinguished by superior technical characteristics; they all ensure water tightness and structural strength.

Tank containers are purpose-built containers designed to transport hazardous and non-hazardous liquids.

They have valves installed that allows them to load and unload the crude oil.

ISO tank containers are designed to meet particular requirements based on the material they will transport; in this case, it is crude oil.

Hence, it can be said that the ISO tank containers are extremely reliable and can endure intense pressure and damage.

ISO tanks are very unlikely to leak and do not need extra cargo packaging, making them more suitable for transporting crude oil.

ISO tanks keep temperature-sensitive cargo at a constant temperature and can be transported by land or sea.

Tank containers have some advantages over other means of transporting crude oil, like transporting through pipelines or ships.

The pipeline takes many years to construct and have a fixed route to follow while the tank container does not have to follow a fixed route, can reach many areas easily and where there is an increase in demand you can simply add more tank containers in the shipment.

Oil tanker ships have a greater chance of oil spills whereas the tank containers have fewer chances of oil spills due to their protective design that shields against accidents.

23. How Can A Tank Container Be Reused?

Tank containers are generally designed in such a way that they have an economic lifespan of about twenty years.

During its lifespan, the tank container is used intensely and repeatedly.

As soon as a filled tank container is unloaded it is then thoroughly cleaned, inspected and prepared for the next assignment.

A tank container used on long-haul trades, such as China to Europe, where the door-to-door journey takes about 6-7 weeks, could transport up to eight loads per year.

This equates to 160 loads or 4,000 metric tons of shipment over 20 years.

Hence, it means that short-haul trades would result in a significant increase in loads.

The tank containers provide a door-to-door service.

For example, if a tank container is loaded at plant A and shipped by truck, rail or ship to plant B where the tank container is unloaded and the shipment is headed into the production course.

Hence, due to this entire long course, it is recommended to reuse the tank container.

After the transportation of hazardous material in tank containers, it is important to wash and clean the vessel thoroughly with a chemical cleansing agent leaving behind no traces of the hazardous material.

It is also suggested that a tank container that has been continuously used for transporting hazardous materials, shall not be used to transfer foodstuffs because it can prove to be life-threatening.

24. What Is The Difference Between Flexi Tanks And ISO Tank Containers?

An ISO tank container is a stainless steel tank with multiple layers of protection that can carry both hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids by sea, rail, or road.

While a flexitank is a hermetic sealed, collapsible and flexible bag/bladder that, when loaded, fits inside a standard 20-foot intermodal shipping container.

Bulk liquid ISO tanks have a cylindrical shape and can also be lined to reduce wear and corrosion from the contents, but they do not have the large disposable bladder lining found in flexitanks.

Tank containers can be designed specifically for food transportation in addition to transporting bulk liquid gas and diesel.

Whereas flexitanks are commonly used to transport food-grade liquids, but they can also transport non-edible liquids.

Tank containers come in several models, but they all can withhold between 5,500 and 11,600 gallons (approximately 20,800 to 42,900 litres) with respect to weight restrictions.

Flexitanks are available in a wide range of sizes, with regular capacities varying from 16 to 24 thousand litres.

Tank containers have an advantage over flexitanks is that they can have up to six compartments.

Flexitanks will save you money depending on the size of your shipment because the Flexi bags (the inflatable bag within the flexitank) expand to fill the shipping container.

In comparison to flexitanks, which are usually discarded after holding a liquid, tank containers are more durable and have a lifetime of around 30 years.

While both ISO tank containers and flexitanks have many advantages depending on the shipment and its desired needs, ISO tank containers are the preferred way of transporting bulk liquids in the industry.

Tank containers are preferred because of their reliability, durability, security and efficiency.

25. What Is The Free Storage Time For Tank Containers?

The free days for tank containers are usually about 3-5 days after the container has been discharged from the transportation vessel.

The cost of storing the container until it is picked up and gated from the terminal is deducted.

Before the cargo can be picked up from the port, demurrage is needed to be paid off.

Detention applies to time spent outside of the port, and it will be levied if the consignee keeps the carrier’s container longer than the permitted free days.

In other words, when a container is picked up but not returned to the carrier, a detention fee is imposed.

Detention fees are an attempt to speed up the turnaround time of a container and make shipping more effective.

Q26. What Is The Minimum Quantity For Shipping Through Tank Containers?

In general, tanks should be filled to no less than 80% of their ability to prevent any harmful surges or swells during transportation.

Tanks must also not be loaded to their maximum capacity.

There must be enough ullage space left, which must be calculated using the thermal expansion of the substance being transported.

27. What Are The Different Types Of Loading Procedures?

Before loading the tank container there is an important process that needs to be carried out, that is ‘pressure testing’, it is to make sure that there is no leakage in the tank and to confirm that all valves are working properly.

There are two types of loading procedures, known as gravity loading and pressure loading, explained as follows;

Gravity Loading

In gravity loading, the substance is transferred from an overhead storage tank into the ISO tank container through the manhole, located on the top side of the tank.

The container must be filled via the top or bottom outlets for a closed-loop system using gravity, with the vapours being returned to the supply tank through the airline link.

Pressure Loading

The substance is pumped into the tank through the manhole or the top and bottom valves in this process.

Vapours are vented back into the storage container by the airline if the substance needs a closed-loop system.

Some hazardous goods must be transported in tanks with no openings below the liquid’s surface level, with the substance being discharged through a syphon pipe, using either pressure or pumping.

28. What Are The General Safety Points Of A Tank Container?

Since there is always a pressure difference between a closed tank and the atmosphere so all the valves should be opened with caution and all the pressure within the tank must be released before opening the manhole.

Always open and close the foot valve first when using the bottom outlet.

Before loading or unloading, make sure that all valves that are not in use are shut off, and if loading through the manhole, secure the hose as close to the manhole as possible to avoid hose whiplash and contact with the tank surface.

Before making some other connections, always earth the container to a nearby earthing spot.

Make sure that the tank has been washed thoroughly before entering it because if a hazardous chemical is left inside the tank it can prove to be very harmful.

Only a fully trained person should be allowed to enter the tank.

29. What Are The Risks Involved In Maritime Transport of Tank Containers?

  • Delayed shipment –Inefficient port time and formality control are the most common causes of delays.

Other factors, such as force majeure events such as a hurricane or, in certain parts of the world, the possibility of a pirate attack, may affect the shipment.

  • Lost goods –While this is currently a very low risk, it may occur in the event of a problem with the boat, such as it sinking or breaking down, as well as robbery or theft in loading and destination ports in countries with high levels of corruption.
  • Moisture, humidity or extreme temperatures – To prevent the cargo from being unusable due to moisture, humidity, or excessive heat or cold, the environment must be meticulously regulated.
  • Natural disasters –Natural disasters have become more common and severe in recent years, making this the most unpredictably dangerous risk on the list.

For transportation of battery packs, you can use swap body containers.

We have equipped our system for the transportation of battery pack.

We have certification of UN 38.3 and ISO 9001-2008, so we can provide you with tension-free shipment for battery packs.

33. Can You Transport Fragile Items In Tank Containers?

A Tank Container is mostly used for shipping liquids, gasses, and powder products and goods, while, some shippers do not follow the ISO Standards and just use the Tank Containers for other types of goods as well.

It is not recommended to transport other types of products through Tank Container as they are not specifically made for it.

Moreover, a Tank Container is mostly shipped through the ocean or railway in which a fragile item or product cannot stay safe till the end of the journey.

34. How Can You Transport Fruits And Vegetables In Tank Containers?

A Tank Container is also used to transport fruit juices from one place to another but, it cannot be used to transport fruits and vegetables in it.

A Tank Container is not made to transport these kinds of products in a Tank Container because its shape and design do not support the idea to transport fruits in a Tank Container.

The Products which are in liquid, gasses or powder form, can be easily be shipped but other than that, goods may rotten inside the Tank Container which is on the road or in the ocean for months.

So it is better to follow the ISO standards and use Tank Containers for which they are originally built.
